| Mae Hong Son Mae Hong Son, the fantastic province in the west northern most of Thailand, which hides itself and stays calmly in the line of complicated valleys. In the ancient time with the difficulty of transportation made the province nearly cuts off from the outside world. Afterwards, because of the wonderful beauty of landscape which created by the nature makes it very popular among the visitors, the different cultures and traditions from other northern provinces, and the simple lifestyle without civilization therefore, it becomes the interesting destination province to all over the world tourists.
Phraya Singhanartracha Monument
The first Mae Hong Son’s ruler monument located prominently on Khunlumprapas road at the centre of town. Phya Singhanartracha or “Shan ka lay” in Shan’s name was the first ruler and the one who collected all the people to build a town in the name of “ Baan Khunyuam” which later in the year of Buddhist era 2417 “Baan Khunyuam” was promoted to be a town and changed its name to be “Mae Hong Son Town” or “Mae Hong Son Province” at the present time. The tourists can drop in for doing some worship at the monument on the way to town.
Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu.
located on a hill to the west of town, is a major provincial landmark. There are two Burmese-style Chedis (pagodas). The larger one was built in 1860 while the smaller one was erected in 1874. A panoramic view of Mae Hong Son can be enjoyed from the site.
Wat Phra Non.
It is one of the most beautiful and famous temple in Mae Hong Son which houses a 12-metre long Reclining Buddha in the Thai Yai style .It was built in 1875 by Phra Nang Miah( wife of Phraya Singhanatracha )and the temple also houses ashes of Mae Hong Sorn kings. Another main feature of the temple is the two large massive lions stone lying side by side, presumably providing the passage for those going up to pay homage to the Kong Mu Holy Relic on the hill.
Wat Hua Wiang.
Another name is Wat Klang Mueang. This temple is on Sihanatbamrung Road next to the morning market in the middle of town. It was built in 1863. This temple houses the Phra Chao Pharalakhaeng, a Buddha statue dressed in beautiful attire. It is a replica of a major statue in Mandalay, Myanmar.
Wat Kam Ko.
It is opposite Wat Phra Non. Wat Kam Ko is a Burmese-style temple built in 1890. Kam Ko is the ancient local dialect. Another name is Wat Dok Bun Nak (Gangaw Indian Rose). A special architectural feature is the cover over the passageway from the entrance arch to the chapel. It also stores the ancient scriptures written in the ancient local dialect informing Thai Yai history.
Wat Jong Kam.
It is the first temple in a Burmese-style in Mae Hong Sorn.It is located on the bank of the swamp Nong Jong Kam and was built in 1827 by Phra Singhanataraja a Thai Yai ruler of Mae Hong Sorn. The pillars are gilded in golden flakes. The temple houses a large Buddha statue with a lap width of 4.85 meters cast by Burmese craftsmen in 1926. The principal statue is another statue which is a replica of the statue in Wat Suthat in Bangkok.
Wat Jong Klang.
Wat Jong Klang is located next to and in the same compound Wat Jong Kam or it is called “Twin Temple” where a replica of the Phra Buddha Sighing is installed on an altar. There are several interesting items such as wooden figurines of human and animals which depict the phra Vejsandon Jakata (pronounced Cha-dok which means one of odd stories of former incarnations of the Buddha) created by Burmese craft men and brought over in 1857 , painting on glass about the Jakata and on Prince Siddhartha, as well as on the ways of life of the time. The caption are in Burmese. There are also notations that the paintings were painted by Thai Yai artisans from Mandalay.
Morning Market.
Near Wat Hua Wiang on Sihanatbamrung Road, this lively market is crowded from early morning till 9 am. It is where visitors can see people lifestyle and buy various local food and produces.
Mae Hong Son Royal Folks Art and Craft Centre
It is located on Khunlumprapas Rd., and founded by royal queen Sirikit’s thought in 1984. The Queen spends time traveling to Mae Hong Sorn to find sources of supplementary income in order to be the place of training , supporting the occupation for Mae Hong Son’s people throughout every race of hill tribes , to help poor people and also to raise the standard of living at the same time. It is the place to produce all basketworks, carving, silverware, and weaving cloth in the unique details to sell for both tourists and interested persons. The centre will be opened from Mon.- Sat. at 08.00 am. - 4.30 pm.
Fish Cave Tham Pla Forest Park.
Tham Pla – It is about 17 kilometers from town on Highway No. 1095 (Mae Hong Son-Pai), Tham Pla is a popular attraction of Mae Hong Son where the visitors can travel to in any season. The surrounding areas are brooks and cool hilly forests and many species of plants. It’s suitable for relaxation. A special feature is the hollow cave or a small pond in a rock width 2 meters, depth 1.5 meters which filled with numerous freshwater fish known as Pla Mung or Pla Khang, which is of the same family as the carp. The fish are quite safe from being caught as they are believed to belong to the gods.
Pha Sua Waterfall.
is in tambon Mokchampae about 17 kilometers from the town, on Route 1095 to Pai district with a left turn at Ban Rak Thai village. The waterfall is a further twenty kilometers from the village. It is the 6 level cataract huge and picturesque. The best time to visit the fall is between early August to late September.
Ban Rak Thai (kmt. village)
This village is situated at Tombon Mokchampae, about 44 kilometers from Mae Hong Son .It is the last village near the Thai-Myanmar border. Founded by Kuomintang Chinese soldiers. Most of people here are Chinese who refugee from the south of China during the government change to be communism. The village is famous for its breathtaking views and tea cultivation. Visitors can see how the tea is grown and harvested and taste some delicious U-long tea. An annual Tea Tasting Festival is held at Ban Rak Thai in February.
Ban Ruam Thai.
Ban Ruam Thai is away from Mea Hong Son about 44 km. Takes the route to Pha Seau waterfall until reach Ban Na Pa Paek and then turn left and keep go on for another 6 km. Tourists will see variety of hill-tribes people. Try fresh coffee from the field. Behind the village is a beautiful take and evergreen forest area. There are also the place for camping and accommodation to stay.
Pang Tong Palace.
Located in Mok Cham Phae Sub district area. Follow along the route of Huay Khan-Baan Na Pa Paek with a steep road leading into the mountains. The palace is on the high mountain at Baan Pang Tong in the Pang Tong Highland Development Project. There is an attractive scenery along the both sides of the road. The area inside the palace has various demonstration flowers plot of land, fruit orchards, raising animals for example sheep and pheasants.
Mae Hong Son Bamboo Study Centre.
Located close to the Pang Tong Highland Development and Service Centre. This is an initiative of Queen Sirikit which is under the proceeding of Mae Hong Son Province and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Mae Hong Son. Providing to be a new eco-tourism place which contains a unique character of Mae Hong Son. It has been covered 300 rais of land which is the land with 6 natural species of bamboos and beautiful prominent nature of the country together with the Pang Tong brook, the natural water resource that can provide a plenty of water.
Huey Pong On Water Fall
It is a small water fall with water flowing all year round; it was situated in Fish cave – Pause Water Fall national park. There is a very nice landscape on the way to the waterfall with some pools that seem to invite the tourists for bathing.
Baan Num Piengdin
It was situated near the Thai – Myanmar border in Pabong sub district. It is very popular in going along the river by boat. The tourists have to go on board at Baan Hueydue port. After that the boat will go along the river Pai which has a very pleasant nature, full of mountain ranges, and mixed deciduous forest along the both sides of the river. All through the way on the river the tourists will pass and see lots of ripples descending beautifully, it is really the most beautiful scenery. Moreover, along the way on the river to Baan Num Piengdin most of the tourists cannot forget to drop in at Baan Poo Gang to greet all Padongs or “The Long- Necked” which known by everybody.
Phabong Hot Spring
10 km. away from town the tourists will see the most popular hot spring of Mae Hong Son people. Specially, in cold season there will be a lot of people to go there to relieve their coldness. Inside the area, it has also been provided to be a beautiful park for relaxing.
Phabong Waterfall
It is a small waterfall which is known as Dumkawn waterfall in another name, located 12 km. far from Mae Hong Son province. There are 3 stages of levels and flowing step by step from Dumkawn brook which is like a high steep cliff. It is one of a beautiful waterfall that has never been seen before. The interested tourists can go and visit throughout the year.
Baan Yod Doi
Or Meo Micro web Village which is well-known amongst both villagers and the tourists. The tourists can use Mae Hong Son – Khunyuam route in your travelling. It is 8 km. high steep asphalted road towards Hmong village, they are still very strict in reserving all the cultures and traditions. The environment around is steep mountain ranges descending beautifully step by step including the simple life style without any civilization that attract all the tourists to visit and see.
Baan Rung Arun
Situated 30 km. away from Mae Hong Son Mueng district (using high way 1095 Mae Hong Son – Pang Ma Pa). It is Chinese Yunnan village that settles in the valleys among lots of big and small mountains. The landscape is very beautiful which is very difficult to be seen in any other places. The tourists can walk to have a look of their cultures, and make a visit at Tum Wua temple in the area nearby which has equal natural beauty. In order to have an adequate time to look around of its beauty therefore, the villagers have provided the Home Stay for all the tourists who would like to stay overnight there.
